Blaauwberg Destinations & Attractions

Blaauwberg may be part of the Mother City of Cape Town, but it enjoys a quiet serenity quite different from the hustle and bustle of the City Bowl. This region extends from Milnerton to Mamre and boasts almost 50 kilometres of spectacular coastline and practically untouched beaches. The Blaauwberg beaches are frequented by local families, retirees and couples, as well as by a host of international visitors that are enjoying the unadulterated vistas along with the fresh sea air that many believe to be medicinal.

All of the wonder of Blaauwberg is set against a backdrop of Table Mountain, flanked by Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head. This scene has become a famous image for postcards, coffee table books and other media for its sheer beauty, and it is only from Blaauwberg (particularly from Bloubergstrand) that this vista is quite so special.

Robben Island is also visible from Blaauwberg. This island, while small, was the site of the prison in which many South African political activists were incarcerated. The best known of these are former-President Nelson Mandela, Dennis Brutus, Govan Mbeki, Tokyo Sexwale, Walter Sisulu and South African President Jacob Zuma. There are ferries that depart from the V&A Waterfront and take visitors to the island for a tour of the landscape, the prison, and the cells in which these activists spent many years of their lives.

Bloubergstrand is a major entity of the Blaauwberg region, and is known for its beaches, which are popular amongst kiting enthusiasts and kite-boarders. The main beach, Big Bay, is a surfing hotspot.

Century City is home to the famous Canal Walk Shopping Centre. So famous, in fact, that it is known as the leading super-regional retail mall on the continent. It is home to more than 400 shops, which range from national and international outlets to exclusive boutiques and everything in-between. There is no shortage to the restaurants, fast-food outlets, coffee shops and speciality stores in the food court and further afield. Shopaholics are guaranteed of a day filled with retail delights and culinary treats.

Just outside the shopping mall is the exciting Ratanga Junction Theme Park that comprises 23 rides that range from tame and mild to heart-stoppingly wild. Famous rides include Monkey Falls, Crocodile Gorge and The Cobra. There are plenty of options for little ones to enjoy safely. In fact, Ratanga Junction is great for the entire family. There are a number of restaurants, as well as curio shops and other refreshment stations.

In addition to these, the Blaauwberg region includes Milnerton, Melkbosstrand, Sunset Beach and Table View.
