Southern Suburbs Destinations & Attractions
Cape Town is broadly divided into the Southern Suburbs and the Northern Suburbs. The Southern Suburbs are known for their beautiful homes, many of which are perched on the slopes of Table Mountain. It is no wonder, then, that these areas are home to some of the most expensive properties in Cape Town, even South Africa.
Well-known suburbs included in this area are Claremont, Plumstead, Constantia, Kenilworth and Newlands.
Bishopscourt is also one of the Southern Suburbs and, while it appears small from the main road passing through, it is an affluent area that is impressive in the approximately 350 homes and expansive gardens that it accommodates. This exquisite suburb is characterised by massive oak trees lining the roads, hilly terrain that means that many homes are really secluded, and its fair share of well-known residents (including former-President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu).
An inner-city wine route, Constantia Valley is simultaneously exquisite and convenient, since it offers all of the allure of wine country within a 20-minute drive from the City Bowl. This valley is home to acclaimed wine farms that are known worldwide; including Constantia Uitsig, Buitenverwachting, Steenberg, Klein Constantia and Groot Constantia.
The wettest suburb in Cape Town, Newlands, has some magnificent homes nestled within a very green, lush setting. This suburb is also the site of the famous Newlands Rugby Stadium and Newlands Cricket Grounds, which both host many local and international games on a regular basis. The homes are varied. Some are classically old and charming, while others are more modern and progressive. This creates an eclectic ambience that is inviting. Because of its central location, Newlands has a diverse population of residents, adding colour and spice to the mix.
Observatory is a bohemian-style neighbourhood, filled to the brim with creative folk and those that have fallen in love with the old Victorian terraced homes of the area. Many of the locals are students and lecturers at the University of Cape Town. It is home to a huge array of restaurants, shops and cafés and has a vibe that is undeniably “Cape Town”.
Tourist attractions within the Southern Suburbs include the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, Rhodes Memorial, Cecilia Forest Walk, Chart Farm, and Cavendish Square.
